In short
- Answer engine optimization (AEO) structures web pages so AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity name and cite your business.
- SparkToro and Similarweb data (June 2026) showed 68.01% of Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click, while Google reported in May 2026 that AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users.
- In our October 2026 study of 4,203 search results across 211 ChatGPT answers, ChatGPT cited a company's own site 20.1% of the time when retrieved, versus 3.9% for third-party pages (13.1 odds ratio).
- Ahrefs compared 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD with 4,000 matched controls: AI Overview citations fell 4.6%, while changes of 2.4% for AI Mode and 2.2% for ChatGPT were not statistically different from zero.
How AEO grew out of featured-snippet SEO
When Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026, Gartner predicted a drop in traditional search engine volume. Instead, Google reported in March 2025 that it handles over 5 trillion annual searches and said in Q3 2026 earnings (October 2026) that its year-over-year query growth rate was the highest it had been in the last five years, with AI Mode queries 3 times longer than traditional searches.
In September 2026, Ahrefs measured across 115,254 sites that AI assistants sent 0.43% of website traffic versus 26.82% from search. BrightEdge reported in September 2026 that ChatGPT sent 95.1% of AI referral traffic in August 2026, growing 101% since January. Adobe reported in October 2026 that AI traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 71% year over year in September 2026, with AI visitors converting 90% better and bringing 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visitors. How to do answer engine optimization in 4 steps
Step 1: Allow search crawlers and serve plain HTML
Make sure your key text is present in the HTML without JavaScript and that search crawlers can access the page. For ChatGPT, allow OAI-SearchBot (search crawler) and ChatGPT-User (user fetches) in robots.txt and your bot protection. Blocking GPTBot (OpenAI's training crawler) does not remove your site from ChatGPT search. Google states that to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page simply must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Step 2: Rank at the top of the underlying search results
In FoundByChat's study of ChatGPT answers with web search, results in higher positions of the first search were cited more often. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 218 ChatGPT answers with web search, ChatGPT cited 2.2 URLs per answer on average (10.3% of retrieved results). Position 1 of ChatGPT's first search was cited 55.5% of the time (95% CI 49.1% to 61.9%), dropping to 34.9% at position 2, 27.5% at position 3, 14.4% at positions 4 and 5, 8.1% at positions 6 to 10, 2.4% at positions 11 to 15, and 0.4% at 16 and lower. An SSRN study of 1,736 pages on February 20, 2026 found that Google organic rank mattered most for AI citation, with citation odds at 43% at rank 1 versus 5% at rank 7.
Step 3: Publish factual product, pricing and help pages
In FoundByChat's study, retrieved vendor pricing and product pages were cited more often than retrieved vendor blog posts. In our October 2026 study of 4,203 labelled search results across 211 ChatGPT answers, vendor pricing pages had the highest citation rate when retrieved, and PDFs had the lowest. See our guide on how ChatGPT search works.
| Page type | Share of retrieved pages cited | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor pricing pages | 51.2% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| Vendor product pages | 28.4% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| Docs and help pages | 23.0% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| Vendor blog posts | 14.5% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| Third-party listicles and reviews | 7.5% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| "A vs B" comparison pages | 4.2% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
| PDFs | 0.4% | FoundByChat research (Oct 2026) |
Step 4: Put the direct answer and concrete facts up front
ChatGPT's search keeps a title and a snippet of about 200 characters per page. The GEO audit checks the opening sentence, facts up front, and whether menu or cookie text leaks into the snippet. Start every section with a direct answer, followed by numbers, prices, and scope. For local businesses, FoundByChat measured an association between appearing on cited pages and being named: in FoundByChat's October 2026 local tests, businesses on pages ChatGPT cited had 3.3 times the odds of being named for plumbers and 2.1 times for dentists.
Common AEO mistakes that waste time
A common AEO misconception is that Schema.org JSON-LD markup makes AI models cite your site. Google's AI features documentation and 2026 AI optimization guide state that structured data is not required for generative AI search, although it can still help with rich results.
Independent research confirms this:
- A 2026 randomized controlled trial at Roskilde University using 8 synthetic brands (4 with Schema.org) found no evidence that markup improved visibility in Gemini with Google Search grounding.
- The February 2026 SSRN study of 1,736 pages found schema presence did not predict AI citation once other factors were controlled, while Google organic rank mattered most.
- OpenAI has never stated ChatGPT parses JSON-LD. In May 2026, Mark Williams-Cook hid a fake address in invalid JSON-LD and both ChatGPT and Perplexity returned it, proving they read it as plain text.
Another mistake is chasing Reddit mentions over your own site. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 218 answers, Reddit was 28% of retrieved web results, but only 2 of 2,462 citations. See our breakdown of ChatGPT citations.
How to check and measure your AEO results
To check a single page now, run our free GEO audit (no account required, up to 5 audits daily). It fetches your URL as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and roughly 200-character snippet ChatGPT keeps, looks the page up in ChatGPT, and scores it out of 100.
To track pages over time, FoundByChat asks ChatGPT your customers' questions with web search on, every 2 hours, from the United States or the Netherlands. It records whether ChatGPT's search found ("Found") and cited ("Cited") your page, records the usual position of your pages among search results, and emails you when a page first appears in the index or ChatGPT keeps a new title or snippet. FoundByChat is free to start and checks ChatGPT search only (not Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, or Copilot).

Questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
Traditional SEO focuses on ranking links in search results to win clicks, while AEO focuses on structuring factual content so AI engines extract and cite your business inside a generated answer.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt my AEO in ChatGPT?
Blocking GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler, does not remove your site from ChatGPT search. OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's search crawler, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages for users.
Do I need special Schema.org markup for AEO?
Google says no special schema.org structured data is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI has made no statement that ChatGPT parses JSON-LD. Ahrefs found that changes in AI Mode and ChatGPT citations after pages added JSON-LD were not statistically different from zero. A Roskilde University trial found no evidence that Schema.org markup improved visibility in Gemini with Google Search grounding. An SSRN study found schema presence did not predict AI citation after controlling for other factors.
Which pages on my website should I optimize first for AEO?
Start with your pricing page, core product or service pages, and help documentation. In our October 2026 study of 4,203 search results, ChatGPT cited vendor pricing pages 51.2% of the time when retrieved and product pages 28.4% of the time, far ahead of vendor blog posts at 14.5%.
