ChatGPT vs Google for search in 2026

Google handles over 5 trillion searches a year, and search sends 26.82% of website traffic, while ChatGPT has 1.2B weekly users and AI sends 0.43%.

  • 1.2BChatGPT weekly active users in September 2026 (OpenAI)
  • 26.82%Share of website traffic from search in Sept 2026 (Ahrefs)
  • 0.43%Share of website traffic from AI assistants in Sept 2026 (Ahrefs)

In short

  • Google reported more than 5 trillion searches a year in March 2025, while OpenAI announced 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users on September 29, 2026.
  • Ahrefs found in September 2026 across 115,254 sites that traditional search sent 26.82% of all website traffic compared to 0.43% from AI assistants.
  • Ahrefs analyzed 118,931 fan-out queries on August 20, 2025 and found that 83.39% of ChatGPT's retrieved results did not appear in Google's results at all.
  • Adobe reported on October 29, 2026 that AI visitors to U.S. retail sites converted 90% better and brought 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visitors.

Customers now ask questions on both Google and ChatGPT before buying. Ranking in Google does not mean ChatGPT will mention your business, and ChatGPT search placement is not guaranteed.

ChatGPT vs Google at a glance

Google handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, and search sends more website traffic than AI assistants, while ChatGPT is a fast-growing answer engine where 95.1% of AI referral traffic originated (BrightEdge, August 2026).

Usage and query growth

Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026; Google's 2026 results instead report record query volume. Google reported in Q3 2026 that its year-over-year query growth rate reached a five-year high, and Google Search and other revenue grew 17% year over year in Q2 2026. By May 2026, Google's AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passed 1 billion, with AI Mode queries running 3 times longer than traditional searches in Google's Q3 2026 report.

ChatGPT grew from 800 million weekly users in October 2025 to 900 million in February 2026, and 1.2 billion on September 29, 2026. It handled more than 2.5 billion messages a day in July 2025 (no newer official figure exists). In OpenAI's September 2025 study, 70% of messages were non-work and "Seeking Information" reached 24% of messages, up from 14% a year earlier. See our guide to ChatGPT statistics for more detail.

How each platform finds and picks sources

Google's 2026 documentation explains that Google's AI optimization guide describes retrieval using "query fan-out". To be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, partner indexes, and third-party providers. ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information. When ChatGPT search partners with another search provider, it typically rewrites the query into one or more targeted queries (1.78 searches per prompt on average in Ahrefs' August 2025 study, where only 6.82% of retrieved results were in Google's top 10).

Where ChatGPT gets its search results

  • OpenAI's own index: OpenAI crawls the web with OAI-SearchBot. Through a Cloudflare discovery pilot starting in July 2026, OpenAI indexed hundreds of millions of new pages via about 1% of Cloudflare's network by October 15, 2026.
  • Microsoft Bing: OpenAI links Microsoft's privacy policy and names Bing for Enterprise and Edu queries. Microsoft's Web IQ grounding service, launched June 2, 2026 on the Bing index, powers ChatGPT. Seer Interactive found in February 2025 that 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 organic results, versus 56% for Google.
  • Commercial and publisher partners: OpenAI links Shopify's privacy policy and has 18 publisher content partners, including AP, the Financial Times, News Corp, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and Reddit.
  • Scraping providers: Between May and July 2026, Peec AI observed ChatGPT labeling result sources with four values: labrador (OpenAI's index), bright, oxylabs, and serp. In July 2026, RESONEO analyzed 1,249 answers and found free instant mode drew 63.6% of results from labrador and 34.7% from bright, while paid thinking mode drew 74.6% from bright.

Traffic volume vs conversion quality

Search sends far more website traffic than AI assistants in Ahrefs' measurement, even though 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026 (SparkToro and Similarweb; see zero-click searches). Pew Research (March 2025 data) found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and links inside the summary got 1%. Marie Haynes found across 100 sites (October 2026) that ChatGPT sessions equaled just 0.62% of Google organic sessions.

However, Some studies report growth in AI referral traffic and higher conversion rates for particular groups of AI visitors. Similarweb counted 770.7 million monthly AI referral visits worldwide (June 2025 to May 2026), up 117.4% year over year, and BrightEdge found ChatGPT referrals grew 101% from January to August 2026 (see AI traffic statistics). Visibility Labs studied 94 ecommerce brands in 2025 and found ChatGPT visitors converted at 1.81% versus 1.39% for non-branded organic search.

What to focus on for your website in 2026

Technical preparation for Google and ChatGPT overlaps, as we cover in SEO in 2026 and what is GEO.

  1. Keep Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot unblocked: Allow Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and allow OpenAI's published IP ranges. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler; blocking GPTBot does not remove your site from ChatGPT search.
  2. Write original, fact-dense pages: Google's 2026 AI optimization guide recommends original first-hand content and says no special chunking or AI-specific rewriting is needed.
  3. Serve text in plain HTML without JavaScript: Load core text, titles, and H1s in the initial HTML without JavaScript, and prevent menu or cookie text from leaking into the snippet.
  4. Check how ChatGPT indexes and cites your pages: Run your URLs through our free GEO audit, which fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and roughly 200-character snippet ChatGPT keeps, and scores your page out of 100 (5 audits a day, no account needed).

You can also use FoundByChat to monitor customer questions on ChatGPT search every 2 hours (as a US or Netherlands user). It records whether your pages are Found or Cited, lists the titles and snippets in ChatGPT's index, and emails you when a snippet changes or a new page enters the index. Questions

Is ChatGPT replacing Google Search?

Google reports continued query growth, while ChatGPT has grown to 1.2 billion weekly users. Google reported in Q3 2026 that its year-over-year query growth rate reached a five-year high, and Ahrefs found in September 2026 that search still sends 26.82% of website traffic compared to 0.43% from AI assistants.

Does ChatGPT use Google to search the web?

ChatGPT search uses multiple sources. It uses OpenAI's own index (labrador), Microsoft Bing (via Web IQ), content from OpenAI's 18 publisher partners, and third-party scraping providers (bright, oxylabs, and serp). In an August 2025 study of 118,931 fan-out queries, Ahrefs found that 83.39% of ChatGPT's retrieved results did not appear in Google's search results at all.

Does blocking GPTBot hide my website from ChatGPT search?

No, GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, and blocking it does not remove a site from ChatGPT search. ChatGPT's search index is crawled by OAI-SearchBot, and live user requests are fetched by ChatGPT-User. To be eligible for ChatGPT search results, allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP ranges; placement is not guaranteed.

How can I see if ChatGPT is citing my website?

Check a single URL without an account using the free GEO audit, which looks up your page in ChatGPT and rebuilds the snippet that ChatGPT's search keeps. To track customer prompts over time, FoundByChat checks your questions on ChatGPT search every 2 hours and records when your pages are found or cited.
