In short
- Search engine optimization (SEO) ranks pages to win visits, while answer engine optimization (AEO) aims to make facts useful for AI-generated answers.
- SparkToro and Similarweb (Jan-Apr 2026) found 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click, and Pew Research (March 2025 data) found a traditional result was clicked on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.
- Traditional search still sends 26.82% of website traffic versus 0.43% from AI assistants across 115,254 sites (Ahrefs, September 2026).
- FoundByChat's October 2026 study (4,203 results in 211 ChatGPT answers) found ChatGPT cited a company's own retrieved pages 20.1% of the time versus 3.9% for third-party pages, led by vendor pricing pages at 51.2%.
AEO vs SEO at a glance
AEO and SEO share a technical foundation, but optimize for a ranked link versus a cited fact. Comparing GEO vs SEO or AEO vs GEO, the shift is from page-level keywords to sentence-level evidence.
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Rank a URL in the organic search results to earn a click | Get named and cited inside an AI-generated answer |
| Where it appears | Google and Bing organic search results | ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity |
| Query style | Short keyword phrases | Conversational questions (3x longer in Google AI Mode) |
| Top content types | Long guides, category pages, blog posts | Vendor pricing pages, product pages, help docs in FoundByChat's ChatGPT study |
| Schema.org role | Can help with rich results in Google | No special schema.org markup required for Google's AI features |
| Core metrics | Impressions, rank position, organic sessions | Retrieved in search ("Found"), cited in answer ("Cited") |
Clicks vs zero-click answers: why ranking is no longer enough
Traditional SEO assumes high rankings bring traffic, while AEO accounts for zero-click answers. Google handles over 5 trillion searches a year (March 2025) and reported its highest year-over-year query growth rate in five years in Q3 2026. Despite Gartner's February 2024 prediction of a 25% search volume drop by 2026, Google posted record volume and a 17% year-over-year increase in Google Search and other revenue in Q2 2026.
Yet record search volume does not mean record clicks. Google's AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passed 1 billion in May 2026. In Pew Research's March 2025 data, links inside an AI summary earned a click on just 1% of visits.
When informational queries do not get clicks, being named and cited in the summary keeps your brand visible. In FoundByChat's October 2026 local tests, businesses on pages ChatGPT cited had 3.3x the odds of being named for plumbers and 2.1x for dentists (the 1.6x lift for agencies was not statistically significant).
Traffic volume vs conversion quality
In Ahrefs' September 2026 sample, search sent more traffic than AI assistants; some studies also found higher conversion rates for AI-referred visitors. Marie Haynes (October 2026, 100 sites) found ChatGPT sessions equaled 0.62% of Google organic sessions, and Conductor measured AI referrals at 1.08% of traffic across 1,215 enterprise sites (May-September 2025).
Still, Similarweb reported year-over-year growth in AI referrals, and BrightEdge found ChatGPT led AI referral traffic in August 2026. Similarweb counted 770.7 million monthly AI referral visits worldwide (June 2025-May 2026), up 117.4% year over year. BrightEdge reported ChatGPT sent 95.1% of AI referrals in August 2026 (Gemini 2.4%, Perplexity 1.1%, Claude 0.8%), growing 101% from January to August 2026.
Adobe reported AI traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 71% year over year in September 2026, with AI visitors converting 90% better and bringing 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visitors. Visibility Labs (94 ecommerce brands, 2025) found ChatGPT visitors converted at 1.81% versus 1.39% for non-branded organic search, and a 2026 Marketing Science study (973 sites) found ChatGPT-referred conversions above paid social, though below other traditional channels.
Content and page types: blog posts vs bottom-of-funnel pages
SEO workflows prioritize top-of-funnel blog posts, while AEO relies on product, pricing, and documentation pages. Google reported in October 2026 that AI Mode queries are three times longer than traditional searches. In FoundByChat's research, retrieved pages on a company's own site were cited more often than third-party pages about it. See ChatGPT citations.
In FoundByChat's October 2026 study (4,203 results across 211 ChatGPT answers), citation rates for retrieved pages were:
- Vendor pricing pages: 51.2% cited when retrieved.
- Vendor product pages: 28.4% cited.
- Documentation and help pages: 23.0% cited.
- Vendor blog posts: 14.5% cited.
- Third-party listicles and review pages: 7.5% cited.
- "A vs B" comparison pages: 4.2% cited.
- PDF documents: 0.4% cited.
FoundByChat reported an odds ratio of 13.1 favoring retrieved pages on a company's own site over third-party pages about it.
Technical myths: organic rank and HTML vs Schema markup
An SSRN study found Google organic rank mattered most among the factors it examined, while schema presence did not predict AI citation after other factors were controlled. An SSRN study of 1,736 pages (February 20, 2026) found schema did not predict AI citation once other factors were controlled; Google organic rank mattered most, with citation odds at 43% for rank 1 versus 5% at rank 7.
Google's guidance and empirical tests offer evidence about structured data and AI visibility:
- Google's documentation states no special schema.org markup is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible.
- Ahrefs compared 1,885 pages adding JSON-LD against 4,000 controls; AI Overview citations changed by -4.6%, AI Mode by +2.4%, and ChatGPT by +2.2% (the last two not statistically different from zero).
- A 2026 Roskilde University randomized trial with 8 synthetic brands (4 with Schema.org) found no evidence that markup improved visibility in Gemini with Google Search grounding.
- OpenAI has never stated ChatGPT parses JSON-LD, and in May 2026 Mark Williams-Cook hid a fake address in invalid JSON-LD and showed ChatGPT and Perplexity read it as plain HTML text.
What to change in a normal SEO workflow
Keep your technical SEO intact and add five steps for ChatGPT SEO:
- Allow OpenAI's search and user bots in robots.txt: Allow
OAI-SearchBot(the search crawler) andChatGPT-User(which fetches pages for users) even if you blockGPTBot(OpenAI's training crawler). - Put the direct answer in the opening sentence: State the price or metric first so it fits the ~200-character snippet ChatGPT's search keeps.
- Publish facts on pricing and product pages: Move hard numbers from PDFs into plain HTML on pricing and product URLs.
- Render core text without JavaScript: Keep main copy in initial HTML and prevent menu or cookie text from leaking into snippets.
- Check your pages as
OAI-SearchBot: Use our free GEO audit (5 audits/day, no account) to inspect your ~200-character snippet and bot blocks.
You can also track your site and questions in FoundByChat (free to start), which checks ChatGPT search every 2 hours from the US or the Netherlands, logs "Found" and "Cited" status, and emails you on index or snippet changes.

Questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, AEO builds on top of SEO. Google organic rank remains the strongest predictor of AI citation according to the February 2026 SSRN study, and traditional search still sends far more website traffic than AI assistants.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt AEO in ChatGPT search?
Blocking GPTBot only stops OpenAI's training crawler; it does not remove your site from ChatGPT search. Consider allowing OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI's search crawler) and ChatGPT-User (which fetches pages for users) in your robots.txt rules and bot protection. See how ChatGPT search works.
Do I need special Schema markup for AEO?
No, Google states in its 2026 AI optimization guide that structured data is not required for generative AI search, though it still helps with rich results. Ahrefs found no statistically significant ChatGPT or AI Mode citation lift from adding JSON-LD, and a Roskilde University trial found no evidence that Schema.org markup improved visibility in Gemini with Google Search grounding.
Which pages should I optimize first for AEO?
Start with your pricing pages, product pages, and help documentation before editing your blog. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study, ChatGPT cited retrieved vendor pricing, product, and help pages at much higher rates than vendor blog posts.
