In short
- Position 1 of ChatGPT's first search was cited 55.5% of the time, versus 0.4% at position 16 and lower (FoundByChat, October 2026, 218 answers).
- Vendor pricing pages were cited 51.2% of the time when retrieved, versus 7.5% for third-party listicles and reviews (FoundByChat, October 2026, 4,203 results, 211 answers).
- Pages on a company's own site were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved, versus 3.9% for third-party pages about that company (odds ratio 13.1, FoundByChat, October 2026).
- In instant mode, ChatGPT sees only titles and ~200-character snippets, opening no pages (RESONEO, July to August 2026, 1,249 answers).
Getting cited means passing two filters: retrieval and citation selection.
How ChatGPT retrieves and selects sources
ChatGPT runs web searches and ranks results. FoundByChat's studies found higher citation rates for results in top slots and for retrieved pages on a company's own site than for third-party pages about that company. Cloro (~2,200 prompts, 38 countries, week of October 19, 2026) found 96.0% of answers ran at least one search. Launching GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, OpenAI stated it "makes better decisions about when to look something up" and GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on web searches.
Per OpenAI's help center (October 2026), ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers; when it does, it typically rewrites a query into one or more targeted queries that it sends those providers. Ahrefs measured 1.78 searches per prompt across 118,931 fan-out queries on August 20, 2025. See how ChatGPT search works.
Sources vary by mode. Peec AI (May 21 to July 21, 2026) found four source labels: "labrador" (OpenAI's index) and scrapers "bright", "oxylabs" and "serp". RESONEO (July 2026, 1,249 answers) found free instant mode used 63.6% labrador and 34.7% "bright", while paid thinking mode used 74.6% "bright". OpenAI's search docs link Microsoft and Shopify privacy policies, and Microsoft says Web IQ (launched June 2, 2026 on Bing's index) powers ChatGPT. See where ChatGPT gets its information.
ChatGPT cites a small share of retrieved URLs:
- FoundByChat (October 2026, 218 answers): 2.2 different URLs cited per answer on average (10.3% of retrieved results).
- RESONEO (July to August 2026, 1,249 answers): 58,000 URLs retrieved, 7,600 promoted to sources, ~5,000 cited (~4 per answer).
- Sorank (August 2025 to August 2026, 87,008 answers): 4.1 citations per answer for ChatGPT, versus 11.1 for Gemini and 3.3 for Perplexity.
- Analyze AI (5,755 B2B observations): 68.3% of ChatGPT answers had citations (3.6 per answer), versus 97.4% for Google AI Mode.
Step 1: Rank in the top 5 slots of ChatGPT's first search
Citation rates drop sharply after position 3 of ChatGPT's first search (FoundByChat, October 2026, 218 answers).
| Search position in ChatGPT's first search | Share of retrieved pages cited | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Position 1 | 55.5% (95% CI: 49.1% to 61.9%) | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Position 2 | 34.9% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Position 3 | 27.5% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Positions 4 to 5 | 14.4% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Positions 6 to 10 | 8.1% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Positions 11 to 15 | 2.4% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Position 16 and lower | 0.4% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
Google rankings do not guarantee top ChatGPT slots. Ahrefs (August 20, 2025, 118,931 fan-out queries) found 6.82% of retrieved results were in Google's top 10, and 83.39% missed Google entirely. Seer Interactive (February 6, 2025) found 87% of ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top 20, versus 56% for Google. See our ChatGPT SEO guide.
Step 2: Publish the page types ChatGPT actually cites
Publish clear vendor pricing, product and help pages. FoundByChat analyzed 4,203 search results across 211 answers (October 2026) to measure citations by page type.
| Page type | Share of retrieved pages cited | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor pricing pages | 51.2% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Vendor product pages | 28.4% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Docs and help pages | 23.0% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Vendor blog posts | 14.5% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| Third-party listicles and reviews | 7.5% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| "A vs B" comparison pages | 4.2% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
| PDFs | 0.4% | FoundByChat, Oct 2026 |
Pages on a company's own site were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved, versus 3.9% for third-party pages about that company (odds ratio 13.1).
OpenAI lists Reddit among 18 publisher partners (with AP, the Financial Times and The Guardian, per Search Engine Land, October 2026), yet Reddit was 28% of retrieved results but only 2 of 2,462 citations (FoundByChat, October 2026, 218 answers). See how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Step 3: Put facts, numbers and quotes in your opening snippet
Put concrete facts at the top of your HTML. In instant mode, ChatGPT sees only titles and ~200-character snippets without opening pages (RESONEO, July to August 2026, 1,249 answers).
In "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (arXiv November 16, 2023, KDD 2024, IIT Delhi and Princeton), researchers built GEO-bench with 10,000 queries, simulated an AI search engine using Google's top 5 sources and gpt-3.5-turbo, and also tested Perplexity.ai. Against a 19.3 position-adjusted word count baseline, quotations lifted visibility +41% (to 27.2), statistics scored 25.2, and citing sources scored 24.6, while keyword stuffing fell to 17.7. On Perplexity.ai, quotations gave +22%. Citing sources gave +115.1% for rank 5 pages, versus -30.3% for rank 1.
Use this 7-point checklist:
- Allow
OAI-SearchBotinrobots.txtand your firewall. OpenAI's help center requiresOAI-SearchBotand OpenAI's IP ranges for search eligibility. - Serve plain HTML without JavaScript. Put body text in the initial HTML response.
- Publish pricing, product and help pages in HTML. Vendor pricing pages were cited 51.2% when retrieved, versus 0.4% for PDFs (FoundByChat, October 2026).
- Match your
<title>and H1 to the topic. In instant mode, the model sees only each result's title and a short snippet of about 200 characters, and opens no pages. - Keep menus and cookie text out of the snippet. Place your H1 and opening paragraph before navigation or consent banners.
- Lead with a factual opening sentence. State what your product does and costs right after the H1.
- Include numbers, dates and named sources. Quotations (+41%) and statistics beat keyword stuffing in the KDD 2024 GEO paper.
How to check if ChatGPT finds and cites your pages
To check one URL, run the free GEO audit (no account, 5 audits/day). It fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet, looks the page up in ChatGPT, and checks bot protection, plain HTML, snippet leaks, facts up front, JSON-LD, llms.txt and robots.txt.
To track prompts over time, FoundByChat starts free via Google or email link (no password or card). Add your site and questions; it queries ChatGPT with web search every 2 hours as a user in the US (English) or Netherlands (Dutch), records whether pages were found and cited and their usual search-result position, and lists each indexed page's title and snippet.
Common mistakes that block ChatGPT citations
- Mixing up OpenAI's bots.
OAI-SearchBotcrawls for search,GPTBotfor training, andChatGPT-Userfor user requests. AllowingOAI-SearchBotand OpenAI's published IP ranges is required for search eligibility. - Putting prices in PDFs. PDFs were cited 0.4% when retrieved, versus 51.2% for pricing pages (FoundByChat, October 2026).
- Stuffing keywords. Keyword stuffing scored 17.7 against a 19.3 baseline (KDD 2024 GEO study).

Questions
How many sources does ChatGPT cite per answer?
FoundByChat's October 2026 study (218 answers) measured 2.2 different cited URLs per answer on average, Analyze AI measured 3.6 (5,755 B2B observations), RESONEO measured roughly 4 (1,249 answers, July to August 2026), and Sorank measured 4.1 (87,008 answers, August 2025 to August 2026).
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler; blocking it does not remove a site from ChatGPT search. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI's help center states that allowing OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP ranges is required for search eligibility.
Why does ChatGPT retrieve Reddit threads without citing them?
FoundByChat found that retrieved pages on a company's own site were cited more often than third-party pages about that company. In FoundByChat's October 2026 research, Reddit made up 28% of retrieved results but only 2 of 2,462 citations (218 answers), while pages on a company's own site were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved versus 3.9% for third-party pages about that company (211 answers).
Does ChatGPT read the full web page before citing it?
In instant mode, RESONEO's July to August 2026 study of 1,249 answers found that ChatGPT sees only each result's title and a short snippet of about 200 characters, opening no pages.
