ChatGPT SEO: how to rank in ChatGPT search

In our Oct 2026 studies, position 1 of ChatGPT's first search was cited 55.5% of the time (218 answers) and retrieved vendor pricing pages 51.2%.

  • 55.5%Citation rate for position 1 of ChatGPT's first search (FoundByChat, Oct 2026)
  • 51.2%Share of retrieved vendor pricing pages cited (FoundByChat, Oct 2026)
  • 2.2Average URLs cited per ChatGPT search answer (FoundByChat, Oct 2026)

In short

  • Our October 2026 study (218 answers) found ChatGPT cites 10.3% of retrieved results (2.2 URLs/answer), and position 1 of its first search is cited 55.5% of the time.
  • Across 4,203 retrieved results (211 answers, October 2026), company-owned pages were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved vs. 3.9% for retrieved third-party pages about the company, and vendor pricing pages 51.2%.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and keep facts in raw HTML; Vercel and MERJ found that OpenAI's named crawlers did not render JavaScript (December 2024).

Google rankings do not guarantee ChatGPT visibility: an August 2025 Ahrefs study (118,931 fan-out queries) found only 6.82% of ChatGPT's retrieved results were in Google's top 10.

How ChatGPT search picks and cites pages

When ChatGPT search partners with other search providers, it typically rewrites a query into one or more targeted queries. In our study, ChatGPT cited 10.3% of the web results it retrieved. According to OpenAI's help center (October 2026), ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and partners with third-party search providers. In July 2026, RESONEO analyzed 1,249 answers and found that in free instant mode, 63.6% of search results came from OpenAI's own index ("labrador") and 34.7% from "bright", while paid thinking mode drew 74.6% from "bright". See our guide on how ChatGPT search works.

In our study, citation rates varied by position in ChatGPT's first search. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 218 ChatGPT answers with web search, we measured how often results at each position in ChatGPT's first search were cited.

Search result positionCitation rateNotes from our Oct 2026 study (218 answers)
Position 155.5%95% confidence interval: 49.1% to 61.9%
Position 234.9%Second slot in ChatGPT's first search
Position 327.5%Third slot in ChatGPT's first search
Positions 4 to 514.4%Top five cut-off
Positions 6 to 108.1%Bottom of the first ten results
Positions 11 to 152.4%Rarely cited in the answer
Position 16 and lower0.4%Almost never cited

In that study, citation rates for results outside the top five positions in ChatGPT's first search were low. Read the full breakdown in our study on ChatGPT citations.

Step 1: Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall

To appear in ChatGPT search answers, allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to fetch your site. OpenAI documents its crawlers at developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots (October 2026) and separates search, training, and user actions into different bots:

  • OAI-SearchBot (OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot): surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. Sites opted out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.
  • GPTBot (GPTBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/gptbot): crawls content that may be used to train generative AI foundation models. Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI the content should not be used for training without removing your site from ChatGPT search.
  • ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot): handles user-initiated actions, does not decide whether content appears in Search, and robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

Also allow OpenAI's published IP ranges (openai.com/searchbot.json) in your firewall.

Step 2: Keep pricing, product, and docs pages in plain HTML

In our study, retrieved pages on a company's own site were cited 20.1% of the time, compared with 3.9% for third-party pages about it. In our October 2026 study of 4,203 labelled search results across 211 ChatGPT answers, pages on a company's own site had an odds ratio of 13.1 for being cited compared to third-party pages about the company.

Do not hide prices behind interactive calculators, client-side JavaScript tabs, or PDFs. In December 2024, Vercel and MERJ found that none of the major AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, and Perplexity) render JavaScript; they downloaded JS files in 11.50% of ChatGPT's requests without running them. Put plan names, prices, limits, and specs in the initial server-rendered HTML.

Step 3: Build one page per buyer question and put facts up front

Create a dedicated page for each specific question buyers ask, and state the factual answer in the opening sentence. In the August 2025 Ahrefs study, ChatGPT ran 1.78 searches per prompt on average. OpenAI says that when ChatGPT search partners with other search providers, it typically rewrites a query into one or more targeted queries.

ChatGPT's search keeps the page title and a snippet of about 200 characters. Menu or cookie text can leak into the snippet; the GEO audit checks for this.

  1. Match the H1 and <title> tag to the buyer question or product category.
  2. Put concrete numbers, prices, and integrations in the first sentence after the H1.
  3. Keep navigation menus and cookie notices out of the main content so they do not leak into the roughly 200-character snippet.

See our guide on how to show up in ChatGPT.

Step 4: Check your pages and track search positions over time

Start with the free GEO audit (no account required, 5 audits a day). It fetches your URL with the OAI-SearchBot user agent, rebuilds the title and roughly 200-character snippet ChatGPT's search keeps, looks the page up in ChatGPT, and scores your page out of 100 across bot access, plain-HTML text, snippet leaks, facts up front, robots.txt rules, and noindex.

Because ChatGPT's answers vary, one test prompt does not prove whether an edit worked. FoundByChat is free to start and asks ChatGPT your customer questions with web search on every 2 hours, as a user in the United States (English) or the Netherlands (Dutch). It records whether ChatGPT's search found your page ("Found"), cited it ("Cited"), and its usual search result position, while emailing you on "New in the index" or "Snippet changed". ChatGPT referrals carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. See how to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4.

Common ChatGPT SEO mistakes

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot when trying to block AI training: Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI the content should not be used for training; allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search.
  • Chasing Reddit threads instead of fixing your own site: In our October 2026 study of 218 answers, Reddit made up 28% of retrieved web results, but only 2 of 2,462 citations.
  • Relying on robots.txt alone to hide private URLs: According to OpenAI's publisher FAQ (October 2026), a URL blocked in robots.txt but learned from a third-party search provider may still show as a bare link and page title; a crawler-readable noindex tag prevents that.

Questions

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my rankings in ChatGPT search?

Blocking GPTBot does not remove your site from ChatGPT search. OpenAI's documentation states that GPTBot crawls content that may be used for training generative AI foundation models, whereas OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, and the two settings are independent.

Does ranking on Bing help you rank on ChatGPT?

Some ChatGPT search citations match Bing results, though this does not establish that ranking on Bing helps a page rank on ChatGPT. OpenAI also has its own index. In February 2025, Seer Interactive found that 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 organic results (versus 56% for Google), and Microsoft stated in June 2026 that its Web IQ service on the Bing index powers ChatGPT.

How long does it take for ChatGPT search to update after changing robots.txt?

According to OpenAI's bot documentation (October 2026), it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for ChatGPT search to adjust.

How can I check the snippet ChatGPT keeps for my page?

Run your URL through FoundByChat's free GEO audit to rebuild the title and roughly 200-character snippet using the OAI-SearchBot user agent. To monitor snippets over time, FoundByChat lists your "Pages in ChatGPT's index" and emails you a "Snippet changed" alert whenever ChatGPT updates the stored title or snippet.
