In short
- AEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are two names for the same discipline: structuring web pages so AI systems find, quote, and cite your business.
- The GEO paper was first posted on November 16, 2023, by researchers including authors from Princeton and IIT Delhi.
- BrightEdge found ChatGPT sent 95.1% of AI referral traffic in August 2026, while Google's AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users in May 2026.
- Both use the same AI search optimization tasks: our October 2026 study found ChatGPT cited a company's own retrieved pages 20.1% of the time versus 3.9% for third-party pages about that company.
How AEO and GEO compare side by side
AEO and GEO differ in their origins and associated surfaces, but share the same target outcome and playbook.
| Dimension | AEO | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Claimed by Jason Barnard, who says he coined it in 2017 (self-reported) | November 16, 2023 paper (arXiv:2311.09735) by Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers (KDD 2024) |
| Core tactics | Direct answer paragraphs, FAQs, JSON-LD schema | Quotations, statistics, citations, crawler access (OAI-SearchBot), factual product and pricing pages |
Where people draw the line between AEO and GEO
AEO and zero-click answers
SparkToro and Similarweb data showed 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026. Pew Research found (using March 2025 data) that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one, while links inside the summary were clicked on 1% of visits.

The 2023 GEO paper
"GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan, and Ameet Deshpande was first posted on November 16, 2023, and published at KDD 2024. They built GEO-bench (10,000 queries across 25 domains), simulated an AI search engine using Google's top 5 sources with gpt-3.5-turbo, and tested Perplexity.ai.
On a position-adjusted word count metric (19.3 baseline), adding quotations lifted visibility by 41% (to 27.2), statistics scored 25.2, and source citations scored 24.6, whereas keyword stuffing fell to 17.7. Top methods gave 30% to 40% relative gains, and quotation addition gave +22% on Perplexity.ai. Lower-ranked pages gained most: citing sources gave +115.1% for rank 5 pages versus -30.3% for rank 1 pages. See GEO vs SEO.
Why the distinction blurs in practice
The line between an "answer engine" and a "generative engine" disappeared once search engines added generative summaries and chatbots added live web search.
Google handles over 5 trillion searches a year (reported March 2025), and by May 2026, AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users while AI Mode passed 1 billion. Although Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026, Google reported in Q3 2026 its highest year-over-year query growth rate in five years, with AI Mode queries 3 times longer than traditional searches.
Assistant referral traffic is small, but it grows quickly and converts well:
- Traffic share: Ahrefs measured across 115,254 sites in September 2026 that AI assistants sent 0.43% of website traffic versus 26.82% from search. Conductor measured AI referrals at 1.08% across 1,215 enterprise sites (May to September 2025) in its research.
- Growth and conversions: Similarweb counted 770.7 million monthly AI referral visits worldwide (June 2025 to May 2026), up 117.4% year over year. Adobe reported AI traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 71% year over year in September 2026, converting 90% better and bringing 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visitors. Visibility Labs found across 94 ecommerce brands in 2025 that ChatGPT visitors converted at 1.81% versus 1.39% for non-branded organic search.
The shared playbook: what to focus on
Whether you call it AEO, GEO, or ChatGPT SEO, the checklist is the same. BrightEdge reported ChatGPT sent 95.1% of AI referral traffic in August 2026 (Gemini 2.4%, Perplexity 1.1%, Claude 0.8%), with ChatGPT referrals growing 101% from January to August 2026.
To earn ChatGPT citations, follow five steps:
- Allow search crawlers. Ensure
OAI-SearchBotcan fetch your pages and text is in the HTML without JavaScript. Check robots.txt rules forOAI-SearchBot,GPTBot, andChatGPT-User. - Put facts on your pricing, product, and help pages. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 4,203 labelled search results in 211 ChatGPT answers, ChatGPT cited a company's own retrieved pages 20.1% of the time versus 3.9% for third-party pages about that company (odds ratio 13.1). Citation rates for retrieved pages were 51.2% for vendor pricing pages, 28.4% for vendor product pages, 23.0% for docs and help pages, 14.5% for vendor blog posts, 7.5% for third-party listicles and reviews, 4.2% for "A vs B" comparisons, and 0.4% for PDFs.
- Put facts up front. Start with a clear opening sentence and align your title and H1, and check for menu or cookie text leaking into the snippet ChatGPT's search keeps.
- Add quotations, statistics, and source citations. As the 2023 GEO paper showed, specific numbers and attributed quotes outperform keyword stuffing.
- Check what ChatGPT keeps and cites. Run our free GEO audit (5 audits a day, no account needed) to fetch your page using the
OAI-SearchBotuser agent, rebuild the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT keeps, and get a score out of 100. To track changes, FoundByChat (free to start) asks ChatGPT your customers' questions with web search on every 2 hours from the US or the Netherlands, records whether your pages are Found and Cited, lists your pages in ChatGPT's index, and emails you when a page first appears in the index or its title or snippet changes.

Questions
Does AEO or GEO replace traditional SEO?
Neither replaces traditional SEO. The 2023 GEO paper built its generative engine on top of top search results, and Ahrefs found in September 2026 that search still sent 26.82% of website traffic versus 0.43% from AI assistants.
Why do some agencies sell AEO and others sell GEO?
The GEO paper was first posted in November 2023 and published at KDD 2024.
If I block GPTBot, does my AEO or GEO work stop working in ChatGPT?
The free GEO audit checks robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and ChatGPT-User.
Which pages should I optimize first for AEO and GEO?
Start with your pricing page, product pages, and docs before writing new blog posts or chasing listicles. In our October 2026 study, ChatGPT cited retrieved vendor pricing pages 51.2% of the time and vendor product pages 28.4%, versus 14.5% for vendor blog posts and 7.5% for third-party listicles and reviews.
