How to get your store into ChatGPT shopping

In 2026, merchants can share product data via Shopify Catalog or a product feed with 9 required fields, with no fees for site or app purchases.

In short

  • Per OpenAI's October 2026 shopping help center and merchant portal, ChatGPT shopping results are selected independently, are not ads, and charge no fees for site or app purchases.
  • Shopify stores are included via Shopify Catalog automatically; other merchants apply at chatgpt.com/merchants to share a product feed; the file-upload spec has 9 required fields and uses SFTP.
  • OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, and on March 24, 2026 said the first version lacked the desired flexibility and moved merchants to their own checkout while focusing on product discovery.
  • Product-feed ads in ChatGPT Ads Manager are separate from organic shopping results.

Merchants can share product data for U.S. ChatGPT shopping through Shopify Catalog or a merchant product feed, and keep public product pages accessible to OAI-SearchBot.

How ChatGPT shopping works (and what happened to Instant Checkout)

ChatGPT shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S. OpenAI stated in October 2026 that product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads, and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships.

For product results, ChatGPT uses structured metadata from first- and third-party providers (like price and description) with other third-party content. When multiple stores sell an item, OpenAI ranks merchants on availability, price, quality, and whether a store is the maker or primary seller. Titles, descriptions, review summaries, and labels like "Budget-friendly" are generated by ChatGPT and not verified by OpenAI.

OpenAI also launched "shopping research" on November 24, 2025. Results are organic and based on public retail sites; retailers blocking automated access may be skipped.

Direct in-chat purchasing also changed. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025 with Stripe, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers, alongside the open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). On March 24, 2026, OpenAI stated the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and moved merchants to their own checkout while extending ACP to product discovery with Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair.

Organic ChatGPT shopping vs. product-feed ads

Organic product results and paid product-feed ads are separate. OpenAI announced ChatGPT ads on January 16, 2026 and began U.S. testing on February 9, 2026 for logged-in adults on Free and Go plans. By October 21, 2026, ads were live in 89 countries more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns, and ChatGPT had 1.2 billion weekly users.

Product-feed ads do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations during beta. OpenAI's ad documentation states that product-feed ads (showing image, title, rating, price, and brand) are ads-only during beta and "will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations."

Crawler guidanceDo not opt out of OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search answersAdvertisers must allow OAI-AdsBot; OAI-SearchBot is recommended

Step 1: Submit your store to ChatGPT merchant shopping

Your submission path depends on your e-commerce platform:

  1. Shopify stores: Included via Shopify Catalog without extra work or a custom SFTP feed.
  2. Direct merchant application: Apply at chatgpt.com/merchants to submit a direct product feed to OpenAI.
  3. Partner integrations: OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that product feeds can also be delivered via Salesforce and Stripe under the Agentic Commerce Protocol.

Step 2: Build a ChatGPT product feed with 9 required fields

For direct feeds, OpenAI's commerce documentation requires 9 fields per product. Feeds are pushed via SFTP as full snapshots, with Parquet preferred and daily uploads recommended.

  • item_id
  • title
  • description
  • url
  • brand
  • seller_name
  • image_url
  • availability
  • price

Because OpenAI ranks merchants on price, availability, and whether you are the maker or primary seller, keeping brand, seller_name, availability, and price accurate in daily snapshots is critical.

Step 3: Allow OAI-SearchBot and expose product HTML

A feed is not enough if your site blocks OpenAI's search crawler. Sites opting out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

Check your robots.txt and firewall rules for OpenAI's four user agents (documented October 2026):

  • OAI-SearchBot (OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot): Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search results. Allow it to appear in answers.
  • GPTBot (GPTBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/gptbot): Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI models. Disallowing it does not remove you from search, though if both are allowed, OpenAI may use one crawl's results for both purposes.
  • ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot): Handles user-initiated actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs. It does not affect Search visibility, and robots.txt rules may not apply.
  • OAI-AdsBot (OAI-AdsBot/1.0): Checks landing page safety for ChatGPT ads. Advertisers must allow it.

After a robots.txt change, ChatGPT search can take about 24 hours to adjust. Ensure product text and JSON-LD schema are in the raw HTML without JavaScript, a core part of generative engine optimization.

How to check if your products show up in ChatGPT

Test any product or category URL with the free GEO audit (no account needed, 5 audits/day). It fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, checks bot protection, non-JS HTML text, JSON-LD, robots.txt, and noindex, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT search keeps, and looks the page up in ChatGPT.

To track buying questions over time, add your store and customer questions to FoundByChat. FoundByChat asks ChatGPT those questions with web search on every 2 hours from the United States (English) or the Netherlands (Dutch), records whether pages are Found or Cited, lists your indexed pages and snippets, and emails you when a page shows up for the first time or ChatGPT keeps a new title or snippet; the first check sets the baseline. It is free to start with no credit card required. In analytics, ChatGPT referrals use utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Common mistakes that keep stores out of ChatGPT shopping

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot to prevent AI training: Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI the content should not be used for training.
  • Assuming Ads Manager feeds populate organic shopping: Product-feed ads are ads-only during beta and will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
  • Letting cookie banners leak into the snippet: The GEO audit checks for menu or cookie text leaking into the snippet ChatGPT search keeps. See AI SEO.
  • Leaving noindex on canonical product URLs: Per OpenAI's publisher FAQ, a URL blocked in robots.txt can still appear as a bare link and title via third-party search providers, whereas a readable noindex tag prevents it.
