What is AI visibility and how to measure it

AI visibility is how often AI answers find or cite you: ChatGPT has 1.2B weekly users and cited 10.3% of retrieved web results in one study.

  • 1.2BChatGPT weekly active users, reported by OpenAI in September 2026
  • 10.3%Share of retrieved web results ChatGPT cited in an Oct 2026 study
  • 55.5%Citation rate for position 1 in ChatGPT's first search (Oct 2026)

In short

  • AI visibility measures how often AI answers retrieve your pages, cite your URLs, or name your business.
  • OpenAI reported on September 29, 2026 that ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly users, and its September 15, 2025 usage study found "Seeking Information" hit 24% of messages (up from 14% a year earlier).
  • Our October 2026 study of 218 ChatGPT answers found ChatGPT cited only 10.3% of retrieved web results (2.2 different URLs per answer on average).
  • Position 1 of ChatGPT's first search was cited 55.5% of the time, vs. 0.4% at position 16 and lower.

What is AI visibility and how does AI search work

AI visibility is the measurable presence of your website and business inside answers generated by tools like ChatGPT. ChatGPT's search can find pages and cite them in an answer. To understand how your business appears, look at how ChatGPT search works behind the scenes.

ChatGPT search launched on October 31, 2024 and became available to everyone without sign-up on February 5, 2025. By July 2025, ChatGPT handled more than 2.5 billion messages a day (no newer official figure exists). Similarweb estimated that chatgpt.com had about 5.9 billion web visits in September 2026, and in a July 29, 2026 report noted that ChatGPT held about 53% of generative AI web visits in May 2026, down from about 76% in June 2025.

With web search on, ChatGPT can retrieve web results and cite pages in its answer. Your pages may be found or cited in ChatGPT search, and businesses can be named in answers.

You measure AI visibility with four concrete metrics: whether your page is found, its search position, whether it is cited, and whether your business is named.

MetricWhat it measuresWhy it matters for your site
FoundYour page is among the web results ChatGPT retrievesShows that ChatGPT's search found your page for the question
PositionWhere your page ranks in ChatGPT's retrieved resultsIn one study, position 1 was cited more often than position 16 and lower
CitedChatGPT links to your URL as a source in its answerShows that ChatGPT cited your page in its answer
NamedThe answer mentions your brand name in the textShows that the answer mentions your brand

The gap between being found and being cited is steep. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 218 ChatGPT answers with web search, the result in position 1 of ChatGPT's first search was cited 55.5% of the time (95% confidence interval 49.1 to 61.9%). Position 2 was cited 34.9% of the time, position 3 was 27.5%, positions 4 and 5 were 14.4%, positions 6 to 10 were 8.1%, positions 11 to 15 were 2.4%, and position 16 and lower was 0.4%.

Citation patterns varied by source in the study. In the same study, Reddit made up 28% of the web results ChatGPT retrieved, but received only 2 of the 2,462 citations. For local businesses, third-party pages matter too: our October 2026 local tests found that businesses listed on the pages ChatGPT cited had 3.3 times the odds of being named in the answer for plumbers and 2.1 times for dentists (for agencies, the 1.6 times lift was not statistically significant). How to measure your AI visibility step by step

You measure your AI visibility by testing the exact questions your buyers ask and recording the retrieved sources and citations over time:

  1. List your buyers' questions. Write down the specific prompts customers use when looking for your product or service.
  2. Test with web search enabled. Run each question in ChatGPT with web search turned on so the model retrieves live results.
  3. Inspect the citations and search results. Review which URLs were cited and which pages were retrieved.
  4. Check your technical eligibility. Run your key pages through a free GEO audit to check access for OAI-SearchBot and see a rebuilt title and snippet.
  5. Track changes across multiple runs. Log whether your site is found, its position, and whether it is cited across repeated checks, not just once.

How to check your results and index snippets

You check your ongoing AI visibility by reviewing which of your URLs sit in ChatGPT's index, what snippet the search engine keeps for each page, and how often those pages earn ChatGPT citations.

FoundByChat automates this for ChatGPT search. You add your website and customer questions, and it asks ChatGPT those questions with web search on every 2 hours as a user in the United States (English) or the Netherlands (Dutch). Every check records "Found", "Cited", and your usual search position, and lists your "Pages in ChatGPT's index" with the title and short snippet ChatGPT's search keeps.

After the first check sets the baseline, FoundByChat emails you on "New in the index", "Snippet changed", or "No search results" (three checks in a row). It is free to start via Google or an email link, with no password and no credit card.

Common mistakes when tracking AI visibility

Avoiding three common tracking errors keeps your measurement accurate:

  • Relying on a single manual check. One check cannot prove a page edit worked. Repeat checks on a fixed schedule show your usual position.
  • Blocking the wrong OpenAI bot. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, OAI-SearchBot is the search crawler, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages for users. Blocking GPTBot does not remove a site from ChatGPT search, whereas blocking OAI-SearchBot stops the search crawler.
  • Letting menus leak into your snippet. Menu or cookie text can leak into the roughly 200-character snippet ChatGPT's search keeps. See our ChatGPT SEO guide for clean page structure.

Questions

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score is a blended number intended to summarize brand appearances in AI answers. Tracking "Found", "Cited", and search position separately is more actionable when you want to inspect those measures separately. FoundByChat does not give a visibility score; its free GEO audit returns a technical page score out of 100 with a letter grade.

How is AI visibility different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking URLs in a search list for clicks. AI visibility focuses on getting your pages retrieved by the AI's background search, ranked near the top, and cited or named in the answer. Compare the two in our GEO vs SEO guide.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my brand visibility in ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, and blocking it does not remove a site from ChatGPT search. Check robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, the search crawler, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages for users.

How can I check what ChatGPT's search sees on my page?

Use the free GEO audit at foundbychat.com/geo-audit (no account needed, up to 5 audits a day). It fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT keeps, looks the page up in ChatGPT, and checks bot protection, HTML text without JavaScript, menu or cookie text in the snippet, JSON-LD, llms.txt, and robots.txt rules.

Which AI platforms does FoundByChat track?

FoundByChat checks ChatGPT search only, with an English and a Dutch interface and API keys for developers and AI agents. It does not track Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, or competitors.
