GEO vs SEO side by side
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | Ranked links and features on a search results page | Synthesized answers and footnote citations in AI chat |
| Primary search crawler | Search engine bots | AI search bots (OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search) |
| How selection works | Ranking algorithms score and order matching pages | In one ChatGPT study, 10.3% of retrieved web results were cited |
| Typical user query | Short keyword phrases | Google AI Mode queries are 3 times longer than traditional searches |
| Traffic volume | Search sent 26.82% of traffic in Ahrefs' September 2026 sample | AI assistants sent 0.43% of traffic in that sample |
| What you measure | Impressions, rankings, clicks and organic sessions | Search retrieval ("Found"), answer citations ("Cited") and snippet text |
Traffic volume and visitor quality
Traditional search still sends far more traffic than AI assistants, so GEO builds on your SEO work. Across 115,254 websites in September 2026, Ahrefs found search sent 26.82% of website traffic while AI sent 0.43%. Although Gartner predicted on February 19, 2024 that traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026, Google reported record query volume instead, with Q2 2026 Google Search and other revenue up 17% year over year and Q3 2026 query growth at a five-year high.
However, traditional search sends fewer clicks when AI summaries appear. SparkToro and Similarweb data (Jan to Apr 2026) showed 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click, and Pew Research (Mar 2025 data) found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without (summary links got 1%).
In the studies below, ChatGPT accounted for most AI referrals, and some AI-referred visitors converted at higher rates:
- ChatGPT dominates AI referrals: BrightEdge reported ChatGPT sent 95.1% of AI referral traffic in August 2026 (Gemini 2.4%, Perplexity 1.1%, Claude 0.8%); ChatGPT referrals grew 101% from January to August 2026.
- Retail revenue per visit: Adobe reported AI traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 71% year over year in September 2026, converting 90% better and bringing 83% more revenue per visit than non-AI visitors.
- Ecommerce conversion rates: Visibility Labs (94 ecommerce brands, 2025) found ChatGPT visitors converted at 1.81% versus 1.39% for non-branded organic search.
How selection works: ranking vs getting cited
In traditional SEO, ranking on page one puts your link in front of the searcher; in FoundByChat's ChatGPT study, citation rates varied by position in ChatGPT's first search. For current data, how ChatGPT search works starts with retrieving web search results and reading their titles and short snippets.
In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 218 ChatGPT answers with web search, ChatGPT cited 2.2 different URLs per answer on average (10.3% of retrieved results). Search position strongly predicted ChatGPT citations:
- Position 1 of ChatGPT's first search: 55.5% cited (95% CI: 49.1% to 61.9%).
- Position 2: 34.9%.
- Position 3: 27.5%.
- Positions 4 and 5: 14.4%.
- Positions 6 to 10: 8.1%.
- Positions 11 to 15: 2.4%, and position 16 and lower: 0.4%.
Retrieval did not always lead to citation: Reddit made up 28% of retrieved results in our study, but only 2 of 2,462 citations.
Which page types ChatGPT actually cites
In our study, retrieved vendor pricing and product pages were cited more often than retrieved vendor blog posts and third-party listicles and reviews. In our October 2026 study of 4,203 labelled search results across 211 ChatGPT answers, company pages were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved, against 3.9% for third-party pages about the company (odds ratio 13.1).
Share of retrieved pages cited by page type:
- Vendor pricing pages: 51.2%
- Vendor product pages: 28.4%
- Docs and help pages: 23.0%
- Vendor blog posts: 14.5%
- Third-party listicles and reviews: 7.5%
- "A vs B" comparison pages: 4.2%
- PDFs: 0.4%
Technical overlap and crawler differences
Consider keeping key facts in HTML without JavaScript, and review OpenAI's crawler documentation at developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots.
To appear in ChatGPT search answers, do not block OAI-SearchBot (OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot). Opted-out sites are excluded from ChatGPT search answers, though they can appear as bare navigational links from third-party search providers unless a readable noindex tag is present.
Blocking GPTBot (GPTBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/gptbot), OpenAI's training crawler, does not remove your site from ChatGPT search because bot settings are independent. After a robots.txt change, ChatGPT search can take about 24 hours to adjust. OpenAI also runs ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot) for user actions, where robots.txt rules may not apply.
Test how OAI-SearchBot reads any URL with our free GEO audit (no account needed, 5 audits a day). It fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT keeps, checks ChatGPT and scores it out of 100.
Measurement and what to focus on first
Measuring ChatGPT SEO means checking referrals (utm_source=chatgpt.com) and the answers themselves. FoundByChat tracks ChatGPT search and is free to start. It asks ChatGPT your customer questions with web search on every 2 hours (US English or NL Dutch), recording whether your pages are "Found" or "Cited", their position, and the title and snippet kept, with email alerts on changes.
Where to focus first:
- Verify crawler access: Allow
OAI-SearchBotinrobots.txtand your CDN, and keep core text in HTML without JavaScript. - Keep doing traditional SEO: In our study, citation rates varied by position in ChatGPT's first search.
- Put concrete facts on commercial pages: State prices and specs on pricing and product pages rather than in PDFs.

Questions
Does blocking GPTBot hurt my visibility in ChatGPT search?
No, blocking GPTBot only tells OpenAI not to use your content for training its foundation models. OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and its setting is independent of GPTBot. OpenAI says not to block OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search; allowing it does not guarantee an appearance or citation.
Is GEO replacing traditional SEO?
No. Ahrefs data from September 2026 shows search engines still send 26.82% of website traffic compared to 0.43% from AI assistants, and Google reported record query volume in 2026. Also, our October 2026 research found that ChatGPT cited the position 1 result of its first search 55.5% of the time.
Which pages should I optimize first for ChatGPT search?
Start with your pricing page, core product pages and help documentation. In FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 4,203 retrieved search results, ChatGPT cited vendor pricing pages 51.2% of the time, product pages 28.4% of the time and docs 23.0% of the time, compared to 14.5% for vendor blog posts.
How can I track traffic and citations from ChatGPT?
For traffic, look for referrals carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com in your analytics software, which ChatGPT referrals carry. To see when ChatGPT retrieves or cites your pages, you can use FoundByChat to monitor your customer questions in ChatGPT search every 2 hours.
