Why people think SEO is dead (and what the numbers show)
AI summaries appear on some search results pages. On February 19, 2024, Gartner predicted traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026.
Instead, Google's 2026 results reported record query volume. Google stated on March 3, 2025 that it handles over 5 trillion searches a year. In Q2 2026, Google Search and other revenue grew 17% year over year, and on October 28, 2026, Google reported that its Q3 2026 year-over-year query growth rate was its highest in five years.
Pew found that users clicked a traditional result less often on visits with an AI summary. Pew Research reported on July 22, 2025 (March 2025 data) that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, while summary links got 1%. SparkToro and Similarweb data (June 8, 2026) found 68.01% of Google searches from January to April 2026 ended without a click. Google also reported in May 2026 that AI Overviews reached over 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passed 1 billion, with AI Mode queries 3 times longer than traditional searches (Q3 2026 earnings, October 28, 2026).

How to adapt your SEO workflow for AI answers
Adapting your workflow means keeping technical search fundamentals while formatting pages so AI crawlers extract facts cleanly. Understanding GEO vs SEO comes down to four adjustments.
Step 1: Allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt and your firewall
The GEO audit checks access for OAI-SearchBot and robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and ChatGPT-User. The GEO audit checks bot protection and access for OAI-SearchBot. See ChatGPT SEO.
Step 2: Serve your main text in the initial HTML
The GEO audit checks for text present in the HTML without JavaScript. Keep page sizes reasonable, stop menu or cookie text from leaking into the snippet, and align your title and H1.
Step 3: Put direct answers and hard facts up front
ChatGPT's search keeps a title and a snippet of about 200 characters per indexed page. Start your page and sections with a direct opening sentence and facts up front.
Step 4: Focus content on commercial and comparison queries
OpenAI's September 15, 2025 usage study showed 70% of ChatGPT messages are non-work and "Seeking Information" reached 24%, up from 14% a year earlier. Focus on product comparisons, pricing, and buyer questions. Read how ChatGPT search works for more detail.
How to check if your SEO works in ChatGPT
ChatGPT search launched October 31, 2024 and opened without sign-up February 5, 2025, while ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly users by September 29, 2026.
To inspect a page, run the free GEO audit (no account needed, 5 audits daily). It fetches your page using the OAI-SearchBot user agent, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT's search keeps, looks the page up in ChatGPT, and scores it out of 100 across HTML text without JavaScript, cookie text in the snippet, JSON-LD, llms.txt, and robots.txt rules.
