What changed in search by 2026

Google reported record query volume, while Pew found lower traditional-result click rates on visits with an AI summary than on visits without one. On February 19, 2024, Gartner predicted traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026. Google reported record query volume: after reporting more than 5 trillion annual searches in March 2025, Google said on October 28, 2026 (Q3 2026 earnings) that year-over-year query growth hit a five-year high, and Search and other revenue grew 17% year over year in Q2 2026.

By May 2026, AI Overviews exceeded 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passed 1 billion. In Q3 2026, Google said AI Mode queries were 3 times longer than traditional searches. Pew Research (March 2025 data) found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and 1% clicked links inside the summary.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT search opened without sign-up on February 5, 2025, and ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly users on September 29, 2026. OpenAI's September 2025 study showed 70% of messages were non-work and "Seeking Information" hit 24%, up from 14% a year earlier.

Why Google says optimizing for AI is still SEO

In its 2026 AI optimization guide, Google says AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe AI search visibility work, adding: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." See our AI SEO and GEO vs SEO guides.

Google's 2026 guide explains its AI systems use "query fan-out", recommends original first-hand content, and says no special chunking or AI-specific rewriting is needed. In "AI features and your website", Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligible pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; Googlebot rules in robots.txt control crawling, while noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet are controls.

Steps to optimize for SEO and ChatGPT search in 2026

1. Allow search crawlers in robots.txt and your firewall

Keep Googlebot allowed for Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode. OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's search crawler.

2. Serve complete text and facts in the raw HTML

Put core copy, product specs and prices in the initial HTML without relying on JavaScript. Use clear titles, matching H1s and a factual opening sentence. Keep menus and cookie banners out of the ~200-character snippet ChatGPT's search stores per indexed page.

3. Build strong pricing, product and help pages

In our October 2026 study of 4,203 search results in 211 ChatGPT answers, we measured ChatGPT citations by page type once retrieved. First-party pages were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved versus 3.9% for third-party pages about the company (odds ratio 13.1).

Test any URL with our free GEO audit (no account, 5 audits/day). It fetches your page as OAI-SearchBot, rebuilds the title and ~200-character snippet ChatGPT's search keeps, checks ChatGPT and scores it out of 100.

To track buyer questions over time, use FoundByChat (free to start, Google or email-link sign-in, no password or card). FoundByChat runs your questions in ChatGPT with web search every 2 hours from the US (English) or the Netherlands (Dutch). It records whether one of your pages was found or cited and the usual position of your pages among search results. It lists each indexed page's title and snippet, and emails you for "New in the index" or "Snippet changed", or when there are "No search results" three checks in a row.

Common SEO mistakes to avoid in 2026

  1. Blocking all OpenAI bots when you only meant to block training. Check your robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User.
  2. Publishing key specifications only in PDFs. In our October 2026 study, retrieved PDFs were cited 0.4% of the time.
  3. Treating one manual prompt as proof of visibility. Single checks do not prove an edit changed citations; track questions repeatedly.

Questions

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. Google handles more than 5 trillion searches a year (as of March 2025) and reported in Q3 2026 that its year-over-year query growth rate was at a five-year high. Also, Ahrefs found in September 2026 across 115,254 sites that traditional search still sent 26.82% of all website traffic, compared with 0.43% from AI assistants.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO in 2026?

AEO and GEO are industry terms for improving visibility in AI-generated answers, while SEO covers search engines as a whole. In its 2026 AI optimization guide, Google states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and is therefore still SEO.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my website from ChatGPT search?

The free GEO audit checks robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User.

Which retrieved page types did ChatGPT cite most often in FoundByChat's study?

FoundByChat's October 2026 study of 4,203 retrieved search results in 211 ChatGPT answers found that vendor pricing pages were cited 51.2% of the time when retrieved, followed by vendor product pages (28.4%) and docs and help pages (23.0%). Overall, pages on a company's own site were cited 20.1% of the time when retrieved, versus 3.9% for third-party pages about the company.
